Unemployment in Calgary decreased by 0.6 percentage points in May to 8.7 per cent.
Calgary added 1,100 jobs last month, for a total of 806,700 positions, up from 805,600 positions in April. Calgary’s labour force participation rate decreased by 0.4 percentage points to 70 per cent.
Alberta’s unemployment rate decreased by 0.3 percentage points to 8.7 per cent in May, compared with 9 per cent in April. The national jobless rate increased by 0.1 percentage points to 8.2 per cent.
The Wholesale & Retail Trade and Manufacturing sectors saw the strongest gains last month, with 3,300 and 2,800 jobs added, respectively. The Accommodation & Food Services sector saw the biggest losses over the same period, with a total of 5,000 jobs lost.
