Calgary unemployment rate decreases to 9.6 per cent in August

The Calgary Region's unemployment rate fell by 0.2 percentage points in August to 9.6 per cent.

Calgary added 2,600 jobs last month, for a total of 805,100 positions, up from 802,500 positions in July. Calgary’s labour force participation rate remained flat through the month.

Alberta’s unemployment rate fell by 0.6 percentage points to 7.9 per cent in August, compared with 8.5 per cent in July. The national jobless rate decreased by 0.4 percentage points to 7.1 per cent.

The Accommodation & Food Services sector and Transportation & Warehousing saw the strongest gains last month with 5,200 and 3,500 jobs added, respectively. In the same period, the Educational Services saw the biggest losses, with 6,600 jobs lost.
