On Monday, March 4, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed sweeping tariffs on Canadian goods — 25 per cent on most exports and 10 per cent on Canadian energy — following a month-long reprieve. In response, Canada has implemented counter tariffs on $30 billion worth of American goods, with an additional $125 billion in levies set to take effect in three weeks.

The following statement can be attributed to Brad Parry, President and CEO, Calgary Economic Development:

“Nobody wins in a trade war. While we still don't know the full impact of tariffs, we do know that our largest trading partner has placed 25 per cent tariffs across the board and 10 per cent tariffs on energy. This will threaten jobs and investment in Calgary, and across the country.

“Now, more than ever, we need to focus on diversifying our trade and our economy as part Calgary Economic Development’s mandate to attract, expand and retain companies, capital and talent. This means opening new markets within Canada and abroad, and it means supporting local companies to help them scale – right here in Calgary.

“We are about to enter a very challenging period. But I am confident we can navigate these turbulent times, build economic resilience and emerge stronger as a city.”
