Arthritis Talks: Arthritis and Work

Arthritis can pose significant challenges to working life due to pain and fatigue. But most people with arthritis want to work. At this Arthritis Talks symposium you will learn:

Your rights, accommodations employers must make and employment laws
The do’s and don’ts of medical cannabis while working towards a work/life balance and the pressures of juggling multiple demands when you have arthritis. There will be a question and answer session following each presentation.

Our Speakers:

David Turner (lawyer):
David will discuss what accommodations employers must make for people living with arthritis, as well as considerations for people living with arthritis and their employers if they are thinking about using medicinal cannabis while at work. David is a partner at EKB, joining in 2006 after articling with the firm. He has a civil litigation practice with a focus on commercial litigation, employment law, and administrative law.

Dr. Catherine Backman (occupational therapist):
Catherine will focus her presentation on work/life balance and the pressures of juggling multiple demands. She will also look at practical ergonomics in the workplace depending on your career, and how to make your workstation work for you. Catherine is President of the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists Board of Directors. She is an occupational therapist, educator and researcher interested in reducing the impact of arthritis on everyday activities. Her research evaluates the outcome of occupational therapy and rehabilitation interventions. Catherine is interested in the psychosocial impact of chronic illness and the strategies people use to live well while living with arthritis. She has published over 150 papers, abstracts and book chapters.
