Steps to End Homelessness

Inn from the Cold is inviting Calgarians to step up for families experiencing housing instability at the 15th annual Steps to End Homelessness. Taking place Sunday, April 26 at the McHugh Bluff Stairs, this milestone event falls on what would have been event founder Suzanne West’s birthday. The high-energy, springtime gathering brings the community together to climb, connect and raise critical funds in support of Inn from the Cold’s programs — with all donations matched by the Power of One Foundation, Suzanne’s charity, now operated by her family. What began in 2009 as a grassroots initiative has grown into a beloved Calgary tradition. Founded by community advocate Suzanne West, Steps to End Homelessness was built on the idea that collective action — one step at a time — can create meaningful change for families in the community. Fifteen years later, the event continues to draw hundreds of participants, united by a shared goal of supporting families on their journey toward stability. “Every year, we see this community show up and step forward in the most inspiring ways,” says Jennifer English, Vice President of External Relations at Inn from the Cold. “Steps to End Homelessness is more than a stair climb — it’s a powerful reminder that when people come together with purpose, we can create real pathways out of housing instability for families in our city. Every step taken on those stairs represents hope, momentum and the possibility of a brighter future.” Family housing instability remains a pressing issue in Calgary, as rising housing costs and financial pressures continue to impact local households. According to the Calgary Homeless Foundation, two in every 1,000 Calgarians experience homelessness — underscoring the urgent need for community-driven initiatives like Steps to End Homelessness. “This event is a beautiful reflection of who my sister was and what she believed in,” says Kathy West, spokesperson for the Power of One Foundation. “Suzanne believed deeply in the power of people coming together to make a difference, and seeing the community continue to step up year after year — especially on her birthday — is incredibly meaningful for our family. We’re proud to match donations and help every step go even further.” Participants can climb at their own pace, whether taking on the stairs once or challenging themselves to go further. The event also features a celebratory, community atmosphere, with participants encouraged to stay, connect and enjoy a post-climb Spolumbo’s BBQ.
