Five Calgary organizations have joined forces to create a new initiative that’s supporting local businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The #SupportLocalYYC campaign, launched by the City of Calgary, Calgary Economic Development, the Calgary Chamber, Tourism Calgary and Calgary Arts Development, highlights different ways Calgarians can keep their favourite local companies afloat during the current tough economic times.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has hit businesses in Calgary hard, and we know many were already challenged from a tough economy,” says Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “We’re all in this together, and we will get through this together.”

While Calgarians may not be able to physically visit their favourite restaurants or local shops, there are many ways to support homegrown businesses, including:

  •         Shopping from local businesses online
  •         Purchasing gift cards from local businesses online to use later
  •         Ordering food for delivery or takeout from local restaurants
  •         Sharing positive reviews on social media
  •         Spreading the word about local businesses that are transitioning to online services
