The availability of affordable housing is aissue for all cities and Calgary will be able to add to the supply with funding from the Government of Canada’s Rapid Housing Initiative that will support three projects and 176 units in the city.

Making Calgary a great place to live with opportunities for all citizens is fundamental to the Place pillar of the economic strategy Calgary in the New Economy and affordable housing for people is an important part of that plan.

The $24.6 million of federal funding will support the following projects and non-profit organizations:

  • Silvera for Seniors to complete a hotel conversion into a seniors' residence.

  • Horizon Housing for new modular homes for women and children fleeing domestic violence.

  • HomeSpace Society to provide new homes for Indigenous people as part of a rehabilitation of an old building.

The Government of Canada launched the $1 billion Rapid Housing Initiative through The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation to create 3,000 new housing units for vulnerable populations across the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Toronto, Calgary-based Dexterra Group (then named Horizon North Logistics Inc.) signed a letter of intent in May to support the City of Toronto’s modular supportive housing initiative with 110 units.
