Calgary continues to garner attention on the global stage – this time for being a city to watch for its technology-focused startups.

The city’s startup ecosystem earned recognition during London Tech Week, where the Global Startup Ecosystem Report (GSER), an influential report for business, policymakers, and the investment community, was released.

The report ranked Calgary as one of the top 100 emerging tech startup ecosystems in the world, and second in Canada as an innovation ecosystem with the best “bang for buck” for the average amount of money raised by local tech startups. The city was also one of the top 20 North American cities for hiring affordable talent.

Calgary is transforming into a global tech hub. In 2020, Calgary companies captured $353 million in venture capital funding though 33 deals. The startup community is expected to triple the size of the tech sector in the city and create 30,000 new jobs by 2031. The startup ecosystem is also supported by local companies who actively invest in it, as well as ongoing partnerships between government, industry, and non-profits.

The GSER is based on data from thousands of startup founders and research on millions of companies. It benchmarked Calgary against more than 300 startup ecosystems, in the metrics required to create a dynamic entrepreneurial environment. Platform CalgaryStartup Calgary and Calgary Economic Development partnered with Startup Genome to obtain an updated baseline measure of Calgary’s startup ecosystem.
