Leveraging digitization in the energy sector will significantly increase efficiency, reduce costs and improve environmental efficiencies. Calgary’s oil and gas sector is pursuing and investing in digitization of their operations in order to stay competitive. Big data and analytics, the industrial internet of things (IIoT), artificial intelligence and virtual reality continue to grow.

Recognizing the opportunity, GE opened its Customer Innovation Centre in Calgary, one of twelve in the world. It is now offering industrial IoT platforms, Predix and Adaptix software for in situ oil sands production, applying machine learning and adaptive intelligence where improved precision will reduce both costs and GHG emissions. GE has also partnered with Zone Start-ups Calgary, an accelerator focusing on industrial IoT entrepreneurs.

IBM’s Natural Resource Solutions Centre in Calgary offers its powerful Watson machine learning platform and data analytics services to bring innovative solutions to the Canadian oil and gas industry. They recently announced a partnership with District Ventures, a local accelerator, to facilitate entrepreneur and large industry collaborations including in clean technology.
