Calgary - the heart of the new west

Did You Know?

Calgary is best known for the majestic, awe-inspiring scenery central to the imagery and imagination evoked by the frontier of the untamed west. Yet, Calgary's remarkably diverse geography makes it a very popular setting for a vast range of productions. From the deserts of Afghanistan, to the battlefields of feudal Japan, to a trendy restaurant in Beverly Hills, to New York City, Calgary is a chameleon able to play a wide spectrum of roles. Summer, winter, spring or fall.

Winner announced!

Calgary Film maker, Zoe Slusar, has won the 2010 Calgary Shorts Film Contest with her production, BLACK COFFEE.

The Calgary Shorts film contest was created by the same group of people who brought the 2009 Gemini Awards to Calgary - The Gemini Host City Partners - and the contest is sponsored by the CBC to show that Calgary has so much more than our Wild West reputation.

Entrants were required to produce a 60-second film that range from grainy, black and white, mini-moody dramas, to twisted and surreal animation, to a high impact thriller of a car chase scene, etc. We thank all entrants for their high quality contributions.

BLACK COFFEE is a comedic short which centres around two stereotypical artsy and emotional teenagers as they discuss the 'deepness' of everyday kitchen appliances, the inspiration they feel from such objects and finally the revealing of some of their creative work.
